Sync Inbox subfolders with Exchange?
Posted by Deb Shinder on December 7th, 2005

I have a Samsung i730 Pocket PC phone, set up to sync email with my Exchange
server. The inbox syncs fine but I cannot synchronize subfolders. When I go
into Options on ActiveSync on the desktop and select to configure the server
settings, I can check the subfolders that I want to sync, but it doesn't
"take" and when I go into the settings again they are all unchecked.

When I go into Manage Folders in the Messaging app on the PPC, the inbox
does not appear as an expandable folder (no + box beside it).

Does anyone know whether this can be done, with or without third party
software? Thanks!

Hi,
I have Exchange 2003 SP2 with a iPAQ H4700 (Windows Mobile 2003 Second
Edition). I do not see an option to specify what folders can be synchronize
when you sync directly with Exchange in ActiveSync. However all folders
should be visible in the Messaging. So when you are in Messaging, click
Tools - Manage Folders. Then you can check the folders you want to sync
with the server.

Please note that the setting for the number of days to download messages and
the size of the message to download as well as whether or not to download
attachments are global settings. There is no option to specify these for a
specific folder.

I agree this is not obvious.

A workaround would be to use IMAP4 or

That's the problem. The subfolders don't appear in the Messaging | Manage
Folders dialog box (attached screenshot of the PPC screen - no option to
expand the Inbox node).

The option to specify folders in the ActiveSync interface on the desktop is
accessed via Tools | Options. On the Sync Options tab, at the bottom there
is a checkbox to synchronize with the server and a Configure button.
Clicking the Configure button brings up a Server options dialog box. If you
highlight "Inbox" in the Mobile Device list and then click Settings, You get
the Inbox Synchronization Settings box where you set the amount of messages
to copy and whether to include attachments. If you click the Select Folders
button on that page, that's where you get the list of which folders to
synchronize. The subfolders DO appear here, but checking them has no effect.

This has not been a problem on my iPaq and other PPCs; it's just happening
with the new Samsung PPC phone.

Thanks,
DS

Couldn't post screenshots here because of size. See
http://www.shinder.net/pocketpc.htm for the shots of the Messaging | Manage
Folders display on the PPC and the Select E-mail Folders dialog box on
ActiveSync.

BTW, I'm using ActiveSync 4.1.

Hi,
Thanks for the screen shots. The issue I was discussing was only if you
sync directly to Exchange 2003. With ActiveSync you need to select the
folders like you are doing. Maybe the folders with an asterisk will not
sync? Have you tried selecting the other folders?

Please let me know the results.

Hi, Chris.

Yes, I tried selecting different folders individually and different
combinations of folders. Still no luck. I appreciate your attempts to help.

Best,

I Have the same problem with all public folders in exchange. They do not
show up in the manage folders list also. I was wondering if you ever got a
resolution to this.

I had the same problem and searched out a company called Pocket Mirror that
offers an addon program for a few bucks that solves the problem elegantly. I
can pick and choose from my Contact Subfolders and they sync as expected.
