- Vista Mobile Device Center - my WM5 device is not recognised
- Posted by George.Smyth@astrac.com on October 22nd, 2007
Any help with the the Vista Mobile Device Center would be appreciated
as this is driving me mad.
The problem I have is that when I connected my WM5 device (i-mate
JasJar) to a new Vista system for the first time Windows hung and
eventually I had to reboot. Now whenever I connect the WM5 device
Windows recognises it in Device Manager Network adapters as a
Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter. But I do not get a
"Microsoft USB Sync" entry which other people talk about.
If I connect another WM5 device (another JasJar) it is recognised
fine and appears in the Mobile Device Center. The original JasJar
works fine on a Windows XP system, so it is not a problem with the
device itself.
So my suspicion is that due to the original hang the device is half
installed and so when connecting again now it is not recognised as a
new device. If I can remove the half installed device it might work.
Does anyone where the Vista Mobile Device Center stores details of the
devices it know about? Any other ideas?
I have tried removing and reinstalling Mobile Device Center, resets of
the WM5 device, uninstalling the mobile network adapter in Device
Manager and pulling my hair out. But no luck. :-(
Thanks.

Hello,
Windows Mobile devices version 5 and later have the ability to connect to
the desktop using two different methods. RNDIS and Serial USB. The
Microsoft Windows Remote Network adapter is what shows up when it's
connecting with RNDIS and Microsoft USB Sync is what shows up for Serial
USB.
Depending on the version of WM5 your device has, it may have a utility for
switching this connection method, and it may have the option in Start ->
Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC. Early WM5 devices didn't have this
option.
The most common connection issue with RNDIS connections is the firewall not
getting configured properly. This is especially true with firewalls other
than what's included in Vista. Here is a website with some good
troubleshooting info and has the specific firewall configuration info you'll
need:

Thanks for the suggestions Steve. Unfortunately they do not get WMDC
working for me.
I do not have the USB to PC option. The JasJar (HTC Universal really)
is an early WM5 device so I guess that was not included. I have
updated to the latest JasJar firmware but still do not have a USB to
PC option. I do not have any extra firewall software, only the one
built in to Vista and even with that turned off it makes no
difference.
I do not think the problem is simply down to RNDIS. I borrowed a
colleagues JasJar WM5 device and that connects fine on my laptop and
is recognised by WMDC. Unplug it and plug my own JasJar in and
nothing. Plug my JasJar in to a Windows XP system with ActiveSync is
recognised straight away.
????
Any other ideas? Are there any registry entries I can check for my
"half installed" JasJar device?

Any suggestions on how to resolve this as I would rather not have to
re-install Vista just to get WMDC working?
Thanks.
