- Why are Notes not synched with Notes in Outlook
- Posted by Siv on January 29th, 2005
Hi,
Can anyone explain how to get the notes you create on the PocketPC to appear
in the notes in Outlook. I am syncing my notes as part of the
synchronisation, but I don't get any of the notes on the PocketPC appearing
on my PC in Outlook. (Outlook 2002).
The only thing that might be a problem is that I am storing all my notes on
the storage card of my Dell Axim (mainly as I can't afford to lose them if
my Axim battery ever dies as they hold thousands of settings for my client's
systems that I just couldn't afford to lose).
If they just aren't stored in Outlook's notes, is there an application that
you can run on your PC that will allow you to view them on your PC??

Beverly,
I had a look at your page and also in the interim I had done a bit more
experimentation and found that I could manually copy the files off the
device. I hadn't twigged that I could use explorer to get into the PPC and
examine its file system.
I created a note in Outlook on my PC and found that it does synchronise with
the PPC. Unlike the scenario in your web page I do have the Notes option
ticked.
The one thing I noticed is that all the notes on the PPC have a small disk
icon in their bottom right corner, whereas the one that synchronised in from
Outlook doesn't so it must be stored in the PPC's memory rather than on the
removable flash card. As I keep quite a large amount of these notes I
probably wouldn't want them all storing in RAM on the PPC as this would
degrade the performance of other things on the device.
Perhaps MS decided not to synchronise stuff on the storage card to avoid
wearing it out as potentially the storage card is being written to many
times as I have my PPC on permanent synch, so when any email arrives on the
PC it is immediately synched with the PPC. I understand that flash cards
only have a limited amount of write/rewrites before they conk out.
If I have any of this wrong, please advise as I am not as familiar with PPC
as I am with the PC.

You tagged the problem... only files (and that includes notes) stored in
ram will sync... those on storage card will exist only as files on the
ppc.
Further, it's "iffy" if you will be able to open the notes files (.pwi?)
on your pc... some versions of work will open them, but objects such as
writing, sound, etc, may not be accessable.
notes/tools/options
has a setting on where notes are stored by default... setting this to
ram will sync any new files and if you move existing notes from the card
to ram, they will sync also.
One approach is to put the files that need syncing (the ones you edit
frequently plus the ones that you need to access on the pc) into ram and
place others that don't need syncing on the card... i.e. static
reference files, etc.

Beverly,
I tried opening some of my notes when I had copied them across from the PPC
to the PC and was able to open them in MS Word 2002. It says they are in
"InkWriter" format but word just displays them as plain text files. I don't
put anything fancy in my notes, they are just plain text.
Is MS likely to create an application for the PC that would allow you to
edit them on your PC and then either synch or copy them back to the PPC?
I would find this quite useful as often the notes are scribbled erratically
using the block recogniser and I would like to tidy them up on the PC when
back home?

"Block Recognizer"
Not sure what you mean by this as the "Block Recognizer" output should
display as typed text in the document.
If you mean "Handwriting" (the pen icon at the bottom of the notes
screen) I tried this looking at pwi files with only handwriting and it
and Word 2002 has no problems opening and displaying the handwritten
notes made on the PPC for you to transcribe.
I did experiment a while back with getting the PC to "recognise"
transferred notes handwriting but was unsuccessful doing that.
One "Handwriting Tip" that may be valuable...
If enter a large amount of handwritten input in notes or pword, say
during a long meeting, it is possible to later "highlight" small
"chunks" of extensive hadwriting and select "recognize" so that you can
correct recognition errors a line or screen at a time.
Hope this helps,
