3-way splitter with cable modem and digital cable
Posted by Scott on June 4th, 2004

I just installed high speed internet for my Dad's computer. In the attic,
the main cable feeds a 2-way splitter that has one leg to the cable modem,
the other leg goes to an amp feeding a 4 way splitter feeding TVs in the
house, and one of those legs goes to another 2-way splitter behind the
digital cable box (one leg to box, other leg to TV for watching other
channels while recording)

We noticed that the digital cable isn't looking quite right, and I think
it's likely the amp that feeds it (even if it is supposed to be compatible
with digital). It used to be fed off the 2-way splitter in the attic and not
go through the 4 way splitter and the amp.

I am thinking of replacing the attic 2-way splitter with a 3-way splitter,
and I will definitely feed one of the 7 dB drop legs to the 4-way splitter
and amp.
The other two legs will go to the cable modem, and to the digital cable box
(after it goes through the other 2-way splitter), but I am wondering about
which one to put on the leg with only 3.5 dB drop. With the setup as it is
now, the cable modem diagnostic says it is receiving a signal of +3 dBmV and
the modem has been running great, with speeds around 3100 kbps. For the new
setup, can I put the cable modem on the 7 dB drop leg, which would drop the
signal by about 3.5 dB more than it is now? I am looking to put the digital
cable box on the 3.5 dB drop since that would result in a level "exactly"
(on paper) where it was before we moved stuff around in the attic. I would
also terminate the outlet on the 4-way splitter that would be vacated by
this change.

Any ideas?

Also, everything is from the cable company...the cable, the splitters
(5-1000 MHz SignalVision models), and the amplifier (Electroline EDA 2100
15dB amp)...no cheap stuff :-)

@fed1read06:

You may need another amp. Or, try running a cable direct from the 4-way
splitter amp.
