4 modems, 3 months
Posted by BoB on November 17th, 2003

About 3 months ago my 49-52K connections started deteriorating,
disconnects and retrains/data stalls, I went from an old boca hcf modem
to a new aopen POS hcf v92 modem, at first it seemed to help, but
later the connectivity got worse. The HCF S/N was always 37-39!
My ISP suggested setting to V34 protocol, I am around 1-2,000ft from the
central telco switching office! I tried a USR 5699B, it was another POS!
I pretty well eliminated house wiring and local loop from my problems.
Since I build quite a few computers, I tried a cheaper(diagnostic
unfriendly),
modem next, an intel 536ep modem, it connected well with my V90(52K) and
(115K) to the V92 servers. After visiting windows update and getting
the newest drivers 5/22/2003, 4.60.2.0, my connections are reported
correctly, retrains and disconnects have all but disappeared AND
I even have quite a few 54.6 connections! ?????????????????????
Has anyone ever found a workaround for the chipset dumping diagnostic data
after disconnect?????????????
hi hooda!
TIA

Looking back to just about the time this started, what might have occurred
that could have some effect on your modem's performance? Did you add/replace
a card or peripheral? Anything sharing the line with the modem? A
thunderstorm, perhaps? Re-arrange the cabling behind the computer?

That's very interesting. Searching the web about the Intel 536ep, I found a
lot of complaints about poor speed and performance. Just shows that there is
no figuring these things out. If throughput is matching up well, I'd just be
grateful.

Do you mean the #UD command and responses in the modem log? If so, I haven't
heard of any. It doesn't cause any harm.

Hi BoB... wish I could be more help. Franc Zabkar might pop in and offer
some guidance.

finger to keyboard and composed:

The 536ep drivers contain the string, "DIAG <2A4D3263>". This implies
that the modem supports the AT#UD Unimodem Diagnostics command.

A freeware UD decoder is available here:

to consider on the previous aopen(POS) hcf chipset. I found one thread
that covers the history quite well, remember this is a "Chipset Family"!

Towards the end was the "better" part!
Throughput:
5.9 K
Compressible:
13661 CPS
Uncompressible:
6025 CPS
Fossil sent me this way!
There are definite server-side issues here, my line is supplied by TDS,
and passed thru BellSouth to the ATT modem bank, what's interesting
is the local telco's dialup server gives me poorer connections!

Thanks Hooda!

thanks, it sort of supports it, but not for a post connection, and for an
active will not capture a signal/noise value(other than 0), also doesn't
read
v92.

I should know how to get these, based on what you just said, but I
still don't know. Could you please give me more details? Thanks.
