Advice needed on how to use voice modems
Posted by Julian on October 2nd, 2004

I've recently done some tests on Fax and Voice software using three modems
in the attempt to find the best combination.

The 3 modems where:

US Robotics 56K V92 Fax Data Modem
US Robotics Sporster Flash V90 Fax Voice Data Modem
Dynamode Conexant M56EXT-RVD 56K V90 Voice Fax Data Modem

Software:

Voice:

Dialer from Windows XP Pro SP2
BVRP Phone Tools 6
FaxTalk Communicator 5

Fax:

BVRP Phone Tools 6
FaxTalk Communicator 5
Windows XP Fax Software
WinFax Pro 10.0.3

With the fax software I incountered the following problems:

Windows XP Fax Software would only work with the US Robotics modem, but not
with Conexant.
BVRP 6 and FaxTalk 5 would work on any of the three modems, but could
negotiate and send faxes to new fax machines. Could not send a fax to an old
machine like Canon Fax-L900 Super G3.
WinFax Pro performed the best by managing to send faxes to any fax machine
using any modem. Very difficult though to send a fax to an old fax machine
through the Conexant modem.

Would anyone know why these big differences in software and modems?

Voice software:

This is a bit problematic. I'm not sure acctualy on how to use it. It is
amazing though that on none of the support CDs that came with the modems can
someone find any info about this. I couldn't find anything on the Internet
either apart this: www.kengolf.com/en/voice-modem.htm
I'm not acctualy sure how it works:

The Conexant modem has the following ports: MIC, Speakers, Phone Line, Phone
The US Robotics Voice has the following ports: Speakers, Phone Line, Phone

If I connect a pair of headfones to the modem speaker's jacks the signal is
very low and bad, with crack noise. I haven't tried the MIC yet.
Is it possible to divert the sound (MIC and speakers) from the modem through
my PCs soundcard?

Where do I find beginners info on how acctualy Fax/Voice software works in
connection with modems and what are the protocol stacks Windows uses to
communicate with the modem?

If you _really_ want to know how voice modem drivers work, google "mgetty".
It's a Unix application but since source code is there you can see in
detail how it's set up.

Basic issue is that most of the modem manufacturers worked in advance of the
standards, so their modems don't quite all work the same. Some of the most
recent ones, the Multitech ZBA series for example, seem to be
standards-compliant, but this introduces its own problems as some of the
software out there contains workarounds for bugs in earlier modem
designs--the Multitechs actually have a setting to turn on some of the bugs
to provide compatibility with software that can't deal with a
standards-compliant modem.

I have just bought a USRobotics Sportser V92 voice/fax/speakerphone.

It' s good modem with good voice clearness.

There is also WinPhone(i gess the name it' correct), the program to
retrieve messages, faxes
and to use it like speakerphone. There is the way to see the log file of
it
to monitor the AT commands to program it. (There is also a good user
manual).

My problem is to program this modem to work like an answering machine.
I tried to send sound files through the serial port with bad results and
not clear sound.
I gess it depends on GSM-B format that it'specific of USRobotics.

....I should try mgetty and look at the code.

Tell me if you have the same problems.

Bye.
