Got a new Polywell computer with a Agere 56K PCI soft modem. My old
computer on the same line usually connected around 49K. The Agere,
however, never connects any faster than 31,200. I just checked again
with my laptop on the same line and it started at 49K.

Any idea what's wrong or what I can do? I got no modem manual with the
computer, and the owner's manual on the CD disk was no help. I sent an
email to Agere
and never got any response.

I've used modems for 20 years starting back with a 300 and up to 56K,
but never
had one fall so far behing the rated speed.

Any help will be appreciated.
