Angia Safejack 28.8 V.34 PCMCIA Modem - will it work with XP?
Posted by Tim Colling on July 9th, 2003

Hi -

I'm trying to help my brother test to see whether the PCMCIA modem card in
his very old Dell laptop is malfunctioning, by trying it in my new HP laptop
running Windows XP Home edition. It is an Angia Safejack 28.8 v.34 PCMIA
modem, Model no. SJ288, FCC ID J2HAFVSJ288. Unfortunately, the company that
made the modem is out of business.

The problem that we're running into, even on my new laptop, is as follows:
Even though Windows XP correctly recognizes and installs the modem, it does
not successfully dial. When we try to dial out with it, we hear dial tone
just fine, but the dialing tones never sound, and after a while the telco
recording comes on that says, "If you'd like to make a call, please hang up
and try again."

Can anyone suggest a remedy, or does anyone know for sure that this modem
will not work under Windows XP?

Thanks,
Tim

Post the modem log for a failed attempt. I suspect the modem is bad,
but when we see the log, we can get a better idea of what is happening.
Good luck.

When I wrote "ATDT#" I meant ATDT followed by a telephone number.
Sorry for the confusion. The reason I asked you to add X4 to your
Extra Settings is because DUN places an X3 in the modem's init string
if "wait for dialtone" is unchecked. At least that's how it is with
Win95B and DUN 1.4.

I don't know if this will work, but locate the DialSuffix parameter at
this registry key (Win95B):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\Modem\000n\Settings

It should have a value of ";" (quotes included).

Alternatively, search for the following line in your .inf file:

HKR, Settings, DialSuffix,, ";"

It should be in the "[MfgAddReg]" section. If it is not there, then
add it and reinstall your modem.

FWIW, here are two examples from my own Win95 modemlogs.

I'm sorry, but it appears that my statement was a red herring. After
researching Google Groups for examples of Win XP modemlogs it is clear
that dialing under Win XP is somewhat different to Win9x.

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...&output=gplain

Comparing your log with these examples suggests that the telephone
number field in your DUN connectoid may be blank. That is, your log
should read "Send: ATDT##########<cr>" instead of "Send: ATDT<cr>".
