- Anyone make an Ethernet/Dial-Up Modem (not cable or dsl)
- Posted by on December 24th, 2003
My firewall has a second interface that provides for fail-over. Normally,
the port would be connected to a second ISP connection, but I'd like to use
dial-up instead. Does anyone make a lower-cost Dial-Up Modem that has an
Ethernet RJ-45 port as opposed to a regular ol' serial port?
TIA!

I'm not aware of of any Dialup modems with an Ethernet connection. I use a
MultiTech RouteFinder broadband router to perform this function. The router
has both an Ethernet high-speed WAN port and a serial port for POTS backup.
I believe SMC and Ascente routers have automatic backup.
Assuming you don't want to change your Firewall get one of these routers or
any router designed to use a dialup modem. Connect it to the Ethernet backup
port and away you go. If the main WAN connection fails the firewall will
begin directing traffic to the aux port. The dialup router will connect to
the dialup ISP when the main connection is restored dialup traffic ceases
dropping the dialup connection.
The dialup router will perform NAT, this may result in doing NAT twice. This
is not a problem for outgoing traffic but will make it more difficult to map
incoming. But then so will the different IP address assigned to the dialup
connection.
