- Call waiting problem
- Posted by Andy Kir on December 16th, 2003
Hi all,
I am trying to use call waiting feature from my phone company. I have three
computers - all with v.92 modems, and on one of those (winXp pro with GTW
modem) call waiting works ok. Two others (win Xp home + USR5660A and win
2000+Conexant modem) never bring notification box on incoming calls (though
occasionally drop the line).
Any advice?
Thanks

Are all three computers sharing the same phone line? I wonder if tapping a
single POTS line into three computers could cause some loadingof the line
such that the modems aren't getting ring voltage of a high enough magnitude.

Nope, only a phone and one modem share this line - should be all right.
Again, the other computer worked with the same line just fine. What strikes
me is that both computers with call waiting problems have essentially the
same modem (it seems that USR softmodems are similar to Conexant).
Other ideas?

That was my other thought. Call Waiting feature transmits some FSK
information down your phone line between the first and second ring (while
the phone is on-hook) - which amounts to a voltage being on the twisted
pair. The modems may not like the fact that they're not seeing a "clean"
line, even while on-hook. Maybe the manufacturer can verify this, or you
could find out online. I would suggest as a next step to swap out the known
good modem with one of the PCs with the non-functioning modem, and see if
the problem goes away. If so, it's the modems. If the problem remains,
then it's something to do with the PC.

Unfortunately, the "good" modem is on my notebook. Of the "bad" modems, one
is also integrated into a notebook.
After trying to resolve the issue playing with initialization string and few
rounds with Dell tech support (extremely disappointing) I decided to work
from the other side - returned the USR modem and got a Catch Call box which
presumably detects call waiting signal and puts the modem on hold for up to
30 sec. to answer the call. Will see ...
Thanks for help, anyway

Good luck - let us know the problem when you find it.
