[Caller ID pop-up] Alternative to Identify?
Posted by John Doe on April 26th, 2006

Hello

We are a small three-person company, and are relying on
Impulse Technology's Identify (http://www.imptec.com) to display
caller ID information on a central PC that is equiped with a PCI
modem, and its free NetCID add-on to have caller ID info be displayed
on all hosts on the LAN. Poor man's CTI, but it works :-)

However, we have a second POTS line on which customers occasionnally
call us, and we are about to open a second office in another city, so
have to look for a new solution since Identify...

- can only monitor one modem, and won't run more than one instance of
itself, so it's impossible to install two modems on the same host,
each connected to a different POTS line

- as for forwarding caller ID information to other computers, Identify
only supports typing IP addresses instead of hostnames, and since the
remote office might not have a fixed IP, relying on a dynamic DNS
won't do.
Besides, Identify only allows typing a single IP address, making it
impossible for more than one host in the remote office to get the
caller ID info. I asked, but they don't intend to change this in
future releases.

=> So... I was wondering if someone knows of an alternative that did
all this:

1. runs on W2K or XP

2. on the server, ie. the PC that has the modems, can attach to more
than one modem, or run in multiple instances where each instance
monitors a single modem

3. can forward caller ID information on all hosts on the local LAN
through broadcasting (eg. 192.168.0.255, to make it short), and also
send caller ID information to multiple hosts on (a) remote LAN(s),
through either a list of IPs or hostnames?

Since any sane setup today involves NAT, I guess the remote client
should be able to receive the caller ID information from the server
through the Net, and then forward it to all local hosts, ie. act as a
proxy.

Thank you!
