Can I program modem to answer phone & x-mit live audio?
Posted by James on March 5th, 2004

Hello,

I'm trying to configure an automatic telephone response system
to:

1. answer a call
2. play short recorded message #1
3. switch to a live audio source for 2 mins.
4. play short recorded message #2
5. hang up (automatically)

Can a modem be programmed to do this? It should be completely
automatic, from answer to hang-up. People I've talked to about this
want to use a telephony gateway chip and VoIP with a server, etc.--and
boucoup bucks--but somehow it seems there should be an easier way to
do it.

Any ideas, or am I missing something vital here?

All help or direction is appreciated,
James Coronato.

Get yourself a modem with voice capabilities. The bundled software will
probably do what you want.

Linux With MGETTY on a voice modem is the cheapest way. (potentially
within $600)

However, given an ISDN line, grab an active ISDN card like Eicon Diva
who support CAPI (even in the USA), and use the VXML download from
sourceforge. Not only can you do IVR, but use the CallerID and Called ID
to provide different response scripts for the IVR. The source of input
can be from lots of different modes and sources. Potentially within
$1,000 (quality is MUCH higher).

For a large scale operation (PRI voice service platform on LAMP), 23port
(concurrent calls), FM Broadcast quality, IVR bridge to text to speech
capable, and Fully Internet ready. Figure on about $1,000 per port
(maximum of about 70 ports). For more info email to info@sohonet.net
