Cannot get online: PC is unable to initialize modem
Posted by haroldact on August 26th, 2004

Hi. I'm hoping someone can help me out. I just installed Walmart
Connect on my parents' PC. When I go to sign on, I get a message
saying "unable to initialize modem". I thought I might have some
settings messed up, but went to AOL on the same computer and the modem
dials up fine. Then when I use the same settings on the Walmart
Connect, nada. I've looked in the device manager and it looks like I
have a Lucent Win Modem on COM3. Any ideas as to why it's not being
initialized by the one program? Thanks!

installed modems and use them - obviously it doesn't. Are there
settings in the software to manually set the modem or find it?

There wasn't any specific help I could find on the Walmart Connect
page, but I'm thinking they have help pages for their customers and a
help file in the software.

In addition to what Gary suggested, you may have to uninstall AOL
software, before it will properly recognize the wmconnect info. It would
be best to remove AOL, wmconnect, and the modem, then reboot. The modem
should re-install. Then re-install the wmconnect software only. See if
that get's it working. Be sure to keep the AOL login/password
information, in case you want to go back to AOL. Good luck.

Good luck.

Hi, thanks for the suggestions. I'm still not getting the modem to
initialize. I did try uninstalling both the Walmart Connect and AOL,
but not at the same time. How do you uninstall the modem? I was able
to reinstall both programs and the AOL still works and the wmconnect
still fails. I also tried intalling NetZero to see what would happen
and have the same problem as the wmconnect. Somehow AOL finds and
uses the modem without a hitch. I will try uninstalling all three
items as mentioned as soon as I figure out how to uninstall the modem.
Will I need any software to reinstall it? I'm running Windows XP Pro,
if it makes a difference. Thanks again!

Harold

Control Panel|Modems highlight your modem as listed, then click the
[Remove] button. That should be similar in WinXP.
