Can't access incoming mail on Comcast
Posted by ftran999 on November 5th, 2003

Are any Comcast customers in the eastern MA area having trouble accessing
incoming email. I am using OLE 6 and when I try to access my email I get
the following error message: Your server has unexpectedly terminated the
connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network
problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.comcast.net',
Server: 'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '+OK', Port:
110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F
Connection to the news server and web work fine.

YES!!! I get the exact same thing (I'm in northern NJ).
At first, about 2 weeks ago, whenever I logged on, I would get
multiple copies of emails received on 10/15 10/16, and it would then
crap out and display that message. Even after deleting them, every
time I logged on I would continue to receive multiple copies of the
same emails (was up to 380 "unread msgs")
I restored my system to a point well before the problem started (using
XP),
and ran ran Virus Scan (came up neg).
I called CS.....
They had me delete all messages from the 15th,(and delete them from
the "delete" folder), both in OE and on Comcast's mail site (was
receiving mail fine through Comcast's home page).
It seemed to fix the problem for a few days, but now, all I get is the
error message (not getting multiple emails downloaded - just the
message).
Had a backup image of my Hard Drive from July, and tried restoring
from that, but same thing...
Next step was to install EUDORA and try that...
First time I logged on, it would download 10 (or so) emails then crap
out, telling me their were X number of messages remaining.
Would try again, and same thing...
After five tries, I got all my emails, but now it gives me a similar
error msg, without downloading any emails.
I haven't had the time to call CS yet, but will do so shortly.
In the mean time, I have to retrieve my emails through the COmcast
home page, (or I use myemail.com)

did you go to the Comcast home page and sign in using your user name and
password?
Next on the left side of page open the Service Center and open Account
Management.
Next check your E-Mail Settings or Associates Memberships/E-Mail IPs to make
sure your account is set up.

When you look up that error on Microsoft, it says connection
terminated by firewall or antivirus program. If you use webmail and
read/print/delete all your messages you won't have that problem. You
probably have a virus in your email.

Probable virus.
Free online virus scanners

Another possibility is to borrow a second computer with anti-virus software
on it, put your HDD in it as a slave, and run the anti-virus software to
clean it up.

Modify your Outlook Express: Click Tools, Options, Read, and Uncheck
"Automatically download messages in preview pane".
and/or
Click View, Layout, and uncheck "Preview Pane"

Add "Preview Pane" to your toolbar, (right-click the toolbar,
"customise"). Now you can toggle it on and off as needed.

Also Click Tools, Options, Read, "View messages in plain text only", "Apply"
That will disable the embedded Javascript, and ActiveX and save you the
grief of activating any malicious script & pop-ups.

Error: "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. . ."
when sending or receiving email in Outlook Express

Situation:
When you attempt to send or receive email, you see one of the
following error messages. You suspect that Norton AntiVirus (NAV)
email scanning is causing the error.

- "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible
causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long
period of inactivity. Account mail hub.optonline.net. Server POP3
norton. antivirus Protocol Pop 3. Port 110. Secure (SSL) No. Error.
Number 0X800CCC0F."

- "The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server.
(Account: <account name>, POP3 Server: <server name> Error
Number:0x800ccc0f."

- "XIMS: Outlook Express POP3, Error 0x800ccc0e, Socket Error 10061"

- "XIMS: Outlook Express POP3, Error 0x800ccc0D, Socket Error 11021"

Solution:
To fix the problem, follow the procedures that apply to your
situation.

Your high speed Internet connection provider has changed from AT&T
Broadband to Comcast
You can no longer send or receive email after changing from AT&T
Broadband to Comcast High-Speed Internet. Read the document Cannot
send or receive email after changing from AT&T Broadband to Comcast
High-Speed Internet service for help with this issue.

To disable email scanning in NAV
Exit any running email programs.
Start Norton AntiVirus.
Click Options. If a menu appears when you click Options, then click
Norton AntiVirus. The Norton AntiVirus Options dialog box appears.
Click Email under the Internet section.
Clear Scan incoming Email and Scan outgoing Email.
Click OK.
Close Norton AntiVirus.

I have this problem sometimes beacause of malformed mail in the Comcast
box. The solution is to login to the web mail server and clean out the box.
After I delete the malformed message thigs return to normal. The malformed
messages are usually spam, and this does not happen very often.
