- Comcast cable internet connection lost
- Posted by Hfolsom on November 25th, 2003
Hi.
I've been using Comcast cable internet for a while. Recently I removed
everything from my hard drive, reformatted it (long story),
reinstalled just my OS. In the process I lost my Internet connection.
I'm pretty sure this is a settings-on-my-computer issue because all
the lights on my modem, etc, are running fine and doing exactly what
they should be.
I'm running Windows 98 (second edition) and the Internet Explorer that
was installed with this OS. This is *literally* the only software on
my computer right now. I don't have Comcast's software installed and
would like to avoid it if possible.
I have the modem I got from Comcast (not sure of model but it's shaped
like a shark's fin) and a NetGear router/firewall. There's only the
one computer running through the NetGear box. I connect with a Xircom
PC ethernet card (yes, this is very, very ancient, but it does work).
I know this is a pretty low-level question, but I'd be very
appreciative of any insight anyone can provide on what the network
settings ought to be. For what it's worth, I've already tried turning
everything off and then cycling power through the modem, then NetGear,
then computer. No luck.
Thanks.

not directly related to your issue, but make sure you have applied all the
latest patches.
make sure you have TCP/IP set for DHCP.
plug modem directly to NIC (power cycle modem after doing so) and if that
works then you know its something to do with your router.

Could be many things here:
Do you have the drivers loaded for the NIC? Is it working properly?
Have you tried it without the router in place?
Run Winipcfg and see if you are getting an IP. Since it was running before
and not now and all you've done is reload OS, at first glance it would
appear to be a software issue thus NIC drivers or network settings for
Win98. Make sure the network settings are set for DHCP.

Many thanks for the feedback and suggestions. I tried redoing all the
settings (DHCP, connecting the computer directly to the modem instead
of through the router, reinstalling drivers, etc.), and I'm happy to
say it now works just fine. Unfortunately, I'm not sure exactly which
step fixed the problem. . . .
FYI (or for anyone who runs into the same issue), the problem clearly
was *not* the router. I'm pretty sure it was a network settings issue
(either that or the NIC drivers hadn't installed correctly the first
time). Happily, I didn't have to resort to installing the Comcast
software!
Thanks again!
