- Comcast cable modem question-SE PA
- Posted by lgench on September 8th, 2003
The folks I live with just had Comcast Internet installed with a
Scientific-Atlanta WebStar DPX2100 modem using the USB port. According
to the user manual, this modem can use both the USB and Ethernet ports
at the same time. If I connect my computer to the Ethernet port, do I
have to have another IP address or can I just use winipcfg and hit
release/renew. The reason I just don't get a router is that they may
not keep the service and then I'm stuck with it. Any info would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanx!

If you are only paying for one IP address - then that is all you will get
regardless of the interface USB or Ethernet.
Go spend the $50 and get a Linksys 4 port router - it's worth it (firewall /
NAT / IP address sharing / etc)
