- Comcast cable multiple IP address
- Posted by Sage on July 6th, 2004
I've had Qwest DSL with MSN for a few years now, and really can't take
their spirit of service any longer, so I ordered comcast today. With
Qwest I only needed 1 IP address to connect all my computers to the
internet, but comcast told me I had to have 3 IP's. I have no clue
how I am going to get this to work through one cable modem and a
linksys router. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Should be no prob - customer service spouts the company line - or is
just ignorant . I have up to 7 computers at any one time through a
linksys router and only one IP from CHSI.

The router has two IPs: one LAN and one WAN IP. Your router DHCP
assigns a LAN IP to each computer connected to the router. Out of the
box, the Linksys IP is 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0 and the
computers are assigned 192.168.1.Y where Y is different for each. The
router is issued a single WAN IP 67.162.W.Z by Comcast. This is the
"single IP" you need for Comcast.

Well, if you have a Linksys *router* (and not just a switch or a hub),
you don't need three IP's. You just need one IP.

I'm assuming that your service through Qwest had something like the Cisco
67x, or perhaps the newer Arescom. Qwest's setup is just slightly diffrent
from Comcast depending on which ISP you had under Qwest. You didn't have to
spend extra for multiable IP addresses as the hardware they typicaly sold
you had router and NAT support. But under Comcast you don't need software
to configure your modem.
If you decided to pay for extra IPs from Comcast, it would work the same as
your old Qwest service. Attach modem to Hub/Switch, attach your machines
to your switch. If you have a [wan] port and several [lan] ports then you
would attach the modem and system to the [lan] ports. If you only have
[lan] ports, then you have a hub/switch and not a router. This setup
would be less secure then the old Qwest setup, updating your OS and
considering a software firewall would be wise.
If you decide to not pay the extra for the IPs from Comcast, you'll need a
router. You say you have a linksys router, just to be sure we are on the
same page you should share the model number. If you have a [wan] port and
several [lan] ports then you would attach the modem to the [wan] port, and
systems to the lan ports. If you don't have a [wan] port then you can't get
there from here. This adds something resembling a firewall between you and
the planet.

or did they?
TOS may dictate 3 pcs = 3 ips
of course this would be just a shameless ploy by comcast for more money for
not more service

Comcast's TOS do not require you pay for any additional IPs if you use a
router behind the cable modem regardless of the number of computers you
have.
As mentioned before, you only have to pay if you use a hub or a switch and
want more than one computer/device on at the same time.
