Comcast, Giganews, and using something other than Outlook

Is there any way to use another news reader (like Xnews) other than Outlook
express. According to Comcasts directions, only Outlook is supported and can
be used.

Talk about lame!

Comcrap wants you to use outlook to support the spammers hauling you
off to Comcrap's commissions.

Free Agent from:
http://www.forteinc.com/agent/download.php
is my reader of choice for text-based newsgroups like this one.

For binaries, there are many great downloaders, some free, some not.
I use Xnews from http://xnews.newsguy.com/ which I like because it has
an easy to mark Q field in the message list. The list is
automatically threaded so multi-part binaries all come on one single
line and when you mark it in the Q (que) field, Xnews will
automatically download, decode and assemble that file. I mark 10,000
then simply go to work or bed and Xnews does its thing.

Others many prefer are Newsbin and Newspro you can get from
www.tucows.com.....

For email I like one of the longest running programs on the net,
Pegasus, from:
http://www.tucows.com/preview/194175.html
It doesn't RUN anything unless you FORCE it to....no scripts, no
virus, no spam dragging you off to some webpage full of
spyware/scripts/popup crap. Pegasus is an email client, not a
spammer. It's freeware. It supports multiple email servers, with
multiple users, in multiple databases. The whole family can have
their own email system all on ONE Pegasus. What more could you need?

UNinstalling Outlook or Outlook Express is like taking off a T-shirt
with a big KICK ME HARD sign on the back. When you uninstall it, be
sure to get rid of Outlook's address book the vbs scripts use to
propagate the worms to your friends. It takes a little effort to get
the Outlook gum off your computer's shoes. While you're uninstalling
dangerous crap in Windows, uninstall Windows Scripting Host that runs
the worms' .vbs files and ActiveX, too, so "they" cannot take over
your system with Billy's spammer tools. Love Letter worm doesn't run
if there's no VBS operating system to run it on.....(c;

They mean that their "support" people will only talk to you about Outleak. If
you use a real news reader like Agent you will need to get your "support" from
Forte.

Hmm - I don't know of a version of OE that runs on a Mac. (:-)

What they are saying is they won't help you with anything other that OE. Any
newsreader that uses standard NNTP protocols should wo just fine.

I've been using Xnews with Comcast/Giganews, and it works great for me.

When an ISP says they "support" certain applications, it's typically to
limit their support costs. Their web site and their staff don't help you
with other choices. The choices are still available, though.

use with MS Exchange servers is also still available on the MS site.
A number of excellent share/free news clients with various feature sets
are available.
