Comcast IP
Posted by BK on October 6th, 2003

I'm having some trouble with email. A comcast tech told me that the
trouble will go away when my IP changes. I told him my ip is always
the same, he said no way, it changes ever 2 days???

Is this correct? If not how do you force an IP change?

Sounds bogus to me. The IP changes when the MAC address is flushed over
time, or when you connect with a different ethernet card.

What trouble exactly?

False. The problem will still be there.

Also false. Mine changed once in 2 years (I was on vacation during the big
blackout).

Move, get DSL, use a dialup ISP, get a different cable modem, or ask Comcast
tech to force a IP change.

Sounds more like a problem configuring your email client.

While some ISPs regularly change IPs, there's no way you can, except by
changing your MAC address. Still that "tech" sounds like he's full of it.
One IP should be just as good as another, so long as it's withing the sub
net range.

You could try and "release" the IP and then "renew" it - "ipconfig
/release" at command prompt and then "ipconfig /renew".

The normal practice will generally get you the same IP as previous.
