- Comcast Speed and Dropped Packet Problems In Maryland
- Posted by Art Prest on March 2nd, 2004
I am using Comcast cable modem service near Rockville Maryland and have been
having both speed and access problems for the past few weeks. Often times
for minutes and sometimes hours at a time I can't access the Internet using
Explorer 6.0 even though Fidelity Active Pro and Eudora Pro still work.
Other times I can access but the speed is incredibly slow. Using NeoTrace I
have done traceroutes to www.briefing.com. www.msn.com, www.yahoo.com plus
others (I have also pinged these URLs with poor results). In these trace
routes I consistently see large numbers of dropped packets at certain nodes.
For the most part the nodes that are dropping the most packets are in New
York and registered to AT&T WorldNet. When I call Comcast I get platitudes
and am requested to reset the cable MODEM, reboot the computer etc with no
improvement. Then suddenly the problem goes away and I am back up and
running.
Any idea what is going on? Are other people seeing similar problems?
Thanks, Art

I'm in Columbia (Howard County) with Comcast. For the last few weeks
I've noticed that my signal strength dropped from ~-4 to -11, and tends
to bounce around more than usual.
No impact to me on connectivity, though.

use pingplotter from www.pingplotter.com to document the problem.
run it continuously before, during and after you experience a problem.
stick the graphs up on the web and post a link so we can look at them.
