- Comcast and Wireless Connectivity
- Posted by Noela on September 4th, 2003
Hi,
Nice to join this forum. I currently live in Baltimore.
I am comcast subscriber for digital cable and high speed internet. I
have a comcast cable modem, hooked up to my PC. I like to use my
laptop around my apartment. At the moment, I physically have to carry
the cable modem to the bedroom and use extension ethernet cables to
ensure connectivity.
I'm thinking of setting up a wireless connection. My laptop has
built-in ethernet connection - (RJ45) and PC can take wireless
ethernet PCI cards.
What hardware do I need?
What security features should I be mindful of.
In the near future, if I change to another DSL provide like Verizon,
would I still be able to use this setup?
Finally, I was thinking of exchanging files between the PC and Laptop
- currently, I merely FTP or email files. Would it be possible to
setup a small local network just between PC and laptop?
Thanks for your assistance - Noela

Go for price, IMO. That means 802.11b wireless, unless you have
specific needs. Set up the wired part first so you have access to the
router setup interface when setting up the wireless. When setting up
the router, you will need to power cycle the modem on the first connect
to the cable modem to force the router MAC to be recognized. Follow the
setup instructions rigorously, cross your fingers, click your heels, and
the intial setup will be easy and painless.
If you are leasing two IP addresses from Comcast, cancel one when
completely set up. You only need one IP with a router. The router will
work with DSL.

Mine's 50' up my ham radio tower running full legal power with a
bi-directional amp on it. With the Pringle's Can microwave antenna,
it's got good coverage for about 1 to 2 miles. SSID is 3. Help
yourself..It's been open since day 1...(c;
Down at the local marina we have Bell$outh DSL plugged into a Netgear
router and Powerline Interface on the docks. Every outlet in every
boat has broadband service if you have the little wall wart from
Netgear with the Ethernet connector on the end of it. It worked much
better than 802.11b in the marina. We had so many reflections and so
much multipath from all the boats and masts and metal we couldn't get
50 yards from a 2-antenna array and connect. Powerline puts internet
in every outlet in the place!....

Get one of those wireless firewall/router boxes. You can then use both

as Quaoar said, get a wireless access point/router/firewall/switch combo with say a wireless usb nic..
I had to "clone" my cable modem MAC address with the wireless access point/router/switch that I have....the MAC address for the
cable modem is on the modem
with DSL setup is yes basically the same as cable modem.....
Yes you can setup a home lan and use windows file and print sharing to transfer files back and forth between your desktop pc and the
laptop pc... Both of these pc's are behind the access point/router/firewall/switch and just use WEP encrytion so nobody can wargame
ya.....
Most newer AP/RTR/FW/SW have MAC filtering which allows you to specifiy the MAC addresses of which PC's to allow connection to for
security...
