Connecting modem to wall-phone
Posted by Allen Weiner on November 5th, 2003

An acquaintence of mine, an 80 year old woman who lives alone, has
just gotten her first computer. The only phone in her home is a
wall-phone in the kitchen. Is there hardware (such as an adapter)
available which would enable her to connect her modem to the phone
line without having to remove the phone from the wall every time? A
solution which does not involve installation of a second phone jack
would be preferable.

flush and have the male modular jack built into the back of the phone
itself. If you have that sort of phone, then I'm unaware of an
adapter that will work. Maybe someone else is aware of one.

If the phone is a model that can be a desktop or wall mount, it may
mount with a space between the wall plate and the phone for connecting
a regular modular wire. If she has one of those, you could easily rig
up a modular Y jack.

It will likely be cheaper to replace a flush mount phone with one like
I described that mounts away from the plate than paying to add a new
wall jack.

If the modem has LINE and PHONE sockets, then connect the modem
directly to the wall outlet via its LINE socket, and connect the phone
to the modem's PHONE socket.

There are adapters that go between a wall-mount modular phone and the
wall jack. They add an extra modular jack on the side or bottom of the
adapter, at the expense of moving the phone a half-inch away from the
wall.
