Dial-up modem takes over my PC
Posted by Phluge on May 7th, 2006

I have a dial-up 56K Agere PCI V.92 modem using XP, OE6, and IE. It works OK
but I don't think I'm getting optimal performance so I thought I would ask a
couple questions:

Sometimes at high-use load periods my ISP drops me a lot. When it does, in
order to reconnect I click "disconnect" using the little computers icon in
the taskbar, a small window appears and I click "Disconnect" there too. At
that point the small window often simply hangs there, the little computers
icon disappears, the phone line is just dead air, and I have to wait varying
lengths of time before it disappears in order to try to re-connect.

Sometimes it seems to have already been disconnected and the small window
disappears immediately and will accept immediate reconnecting; other times
it takes quite awhile. During that interval it seems to take over the whole
computer and I have to leave everything alone while waiting or nothing will
work. This doesn't seem to be normal to me.

Then there are times when it seems to hang during disconnect, the small
window disappears, but when I click on connect-to and the ISP, all that
happens is the Properties window opens. The phone line is totally dead, no
sound. When this happens I have to reboot before I can connect again
normally, otherwise it will just continue to open Properties every time I
try to connect. I have had it hang everything to where I needed to use the
task manager to reboot.

Is this a matter of configuration? I have DLed the proper drivers from
online, so I'm pretty sure that is OK.

What to do? Thanks,

Pflu

when the connection is dropped by the ISP. Posting a modem log might
be useful. A well behaved modem would properly hang up after the
remote modem drops the connection, but I don't know if that's what
your ISP is doing. The modem log might give us a clue as to what is
happening.

Agere doesn't make the modems, they make the chipsets. Did you
install the modem with drivers that came with it? If not, do you know
who made the modem and did you try to look for drivers from the
manufacturer's site?

There is also good documentation on modemsite.com that might help you
locate the modem drivers:

http://www.modemsite.com/56k/lucentamr.asp
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/sv92p.asp

The second URL has info on AT commands and how to limit connect
protocols and speeds.

The modem is set to v.92 (probably the default) but appears to be
connecting at v.90 with no error correction. This may be the source
of problems/dropped calls. Does your ISP support v.92? You may want
to try limiting the modem to v.90 by putting +ms=v90 in the extra
setting box in the modem's properties under the Windows control panel.

05-07-2006 15:28:39.093 - A timeout has expired waiting to comm event
to occour.
<snip>

The log also shows the modem not responding to a hang up and timing
out to command requests in the entries after the above. I can't
really tell from the log why that occurred, but a defective modem,
improper drivers or a resource conflict are possibilities.

Sometimes resource conflicts can be resolved by simply putting the
modem in a different PCI slot.

Thanks, Gary. I have changed to ms+v.90 and am evaluating it --also, I am
fairly sure I have the correct driver because I looked long and hard to find
it, and also the Driver Genius driver manager program says it is right. I
will try changing the PCI slot if necessary.

FYI The reason for that 2/2 subject is, I couldn't post for some reason --
after trying several times I found a tip saying that some NGs restricted the
size of posts (mine was 28K) so I tried splitting it. Can't figure why the
first half didn't post, or why my other posts didn't get through.

Thanks again,

Pflu
