As an alternative to cable service a company called DSL Exteme is offering
very high speed DSL service in large parts of California. For about $60 a
month they offer a maximum d/l speed of 6mb. Has anyone here had any
experience with their product? If so what kind of performance are you
seeing and how would you rate the reliability of service?

That's funny. DSL service is dependent on phone line quality. You won't
get 1/4th that speed unless the phone lines in your area are perfect, and
you are next door to the CO. On the other hand, whatever speed you DO get
will not be subject to intermittent slowdowns, like cable modem IS. -Dave

Of course it will. ALL internet traffic shares bandwidth at some point.
If his local DSL provider has inadequate bandwidth to the backbone, he
WILL see slowdowns during peak periods. We ALL see slowdowns when parts
of the backbone or major nodes go down, and we ALL see slowdowns when
popular sites become saturated with users.
DSL is not magic, just another, flawed, tool.

You've got a point. All connections will slow down. But with DSL, you
won't see slowdowns unless the problem is so huge that it affects just about
everybody on the Internet. In contrast, cable modems slow down with
alarming frequency, based on when the other users in your neighborhood are
using the Internet. Note that cable modem isn't bad, just not as consistent
as DSL. -Dave
