External - DIAL-UP - modem - w/ ethernet port?????
Posted by Bruce Bowen on September 20th, 2004

Note:

1. Cable modems connect to your network with an Ethernet port.
2. DSL modems connect to your network with an Ethernet port.

3. External dial-up modems connect thru a serial port.

I can't get DSL where I live.
My cable company sucks and I fired them.
DirectWay costs too much.

I want to share my (dial-up) internet connection onto my LAN.
I want to plug my internet connection directly into my Dlink router
WAN port.

I know there are other ways to do this but the above is the way I want
to do it. Does anybody make a dial-up modem that connects thru an
ethernet port? Later, when (if??) DSL becomes available I can just
change modems.

Look for an Internet gateway with a dialup-modem backup. I have a
ZoomAir 4165 that has a print server, a couple of LAN ports, a broadband
Ethernet connection and a 9-pin serial port connector for a modem.
Before I got DSL, I'd allow the box to dial via the back-up modem as the
primary connection.

says...

Aside from Jim's suggested product, check out Netgear, SMC (one model each
with an RS-232 port which allows for a shared dial up connection); and even
D-Link has a model with a shared RS-232 port!

I know of no modems with an Ethernet port. I suppose it could be done, but
probably there is no real market for that, given the options available with
other products.

There are routers with a modem built in, but they cost ludicrous amounts of

Thanks! I went out an bought one. It hooked directly into my Dlink
rounter and worked great. All the PCs on my home network now have
direct (and simultaneous) access to the modem! Best dial-up solution
for a home network.
