- FAQ: Maximizing cable modem or DSL speed
- Posted by John Navas on February 2nd, 2004
Q: How do I get the maximum possible DSL or cable modem speed?
Should I use one of those tweaking programs?
A: See the Navas Cable Modem/DSL Tuning Guide at <http://Cable-DSL.home.att.net/>.

I must beg to differ. John's site has been a godsend to most of us cable
Internet users, myself included. Back when I was first started with @Home on my
old Win98 machine I wondered why I was only getting ~800K downloads. After
applying a couple of John's fixes I began to see ~2500-3000K, which was what I
was suppose to be seeing.

For the broadband newbs, Navas used to maintain a modem FAQ on Aimnet.
I'm talking about dial-up modems here, not broadband. Aimnet was a
popular dial-up ISP in Silicon Valley before many of you had heard of
the Internet.
Anyway...Navas has been offering connectivity assistance to the masses
for many years. For free. And his info is pretty good.

He has been very helpful to me.
I have never won an on-line argument with him, even when I still believe
he has been wrong. A lot of the time I have been wrong and he has
supplied information and references that educated me.

John Navas has been a long-time contributor (and personal thorn in my side
-- Hi, John!) for a number of years. His Web pages are full of
information and all of the information is free for the download. Yes,
he's a consultant, and hopes that people who see his public work will hire
him for private consultation and testing. That doesn't detract from the
public good his postings, including this one, and his Web sites provide to
the general population.
Perhaps you need to sit down with RFC 1855 and learn just what spam (on
UseNet) really is before you make a further fool of yourself.

First commercial customer of DSL in Northern Nevada
Used to test V.34/V.90/V.92 modems, which is where John and I locked horns.
Now a system administrator for a Web-hosting company.
