- First time installation gotchas
- Posted by Steve on September 5th, 2003
Hi,
I live in Fullerton, CA and from what I can tell only Adelphia is available as
a cable TV provider. There is a power pole in the north-east corner of our
back yard about 50' from the house. I want a line to the garage (soon to be
converted to small office) and one to the family room in the house. Our house
has never been wired for cable and I was wondering if there are any technical
issues I should watch out for when the installer comes? Things like making
sure the cable line is kept far from the power line to the house, proper
drilling and sealing, best types of cable/outlets. I should mention that we'll
be signing up for the Digital Cable package and Power Link broadband access.
Thanks for the help, Steve.

I would probably run the cable to the house splitting the RG6
into two lines - one for the modem and the other for TV.
Run the modem RG6 to a router in the house and the other RG6
to your TV (and a possible splitter for other TVs).
Connect any house computers to the router and connect the garage
(with Cat5 jumper or wireless or AC powerline) to the router in
the house.
Family Room Cat5 or Garage
Pole ------ Splitter ------- Modem ----- Router ---~~~~~~~~~~----- PC
Ground / \-------- TV or splitter AC/Wireless
All that assumes you have a computer in the house too.
If not, I would run the RG6 cable to the garage and split one half
to a router in the garage (which you connect your computer to)
and the other half with RG6 into the house for your TV (and possible
splitter).
Garage
Pole ----- Splitter ------- Modem ----- Router ----- PC
Ground / \---~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~----- TV
RG6 to Family room
The router will give you a firewall and the ability to add on.
Make sure you get a router with a 4-port switch even if you go
wireless. I would get Netgear or Linksys router.
You didn't say how far from the pole to family room and/or garage
and how far from family room to garage.

Thanks $Bill for the detailed reply and graphic work!
My yard layout is:
Telephone pole in northeast corner of rectangular plot
Garage (20' x 20') 5' south of telephone pole with one
side bordering eastern boundry of plot
House starts about 50' back from telephone pole and 15'
from eastern boundry of plot.

Have him run it to your house. Hire a private contractor on your own
to run it from the house to the garage, and run some cat6 with it as
well.
