Message follows......
A vulnerability in certain Microsoft Windows operating systems has
been identified which may greatly affect your computer's security and
performance. This threat has been identified as the W32 Blaster Worm
or LovSan. While Knology took immediate measures to block the worm's
spread on our network, if you are a user of Windows XP, Windows 2000,
Windows NT 4.0 or Windows Server 2003, you should use the link below
and follow the instructions on the page to ensure your system was not
affected.
http://support.knology.net/blaster.cfm
Technical Note:
The specific action we took at the network level was to block the
ports the worm uses to transmit itself. The ports affected are: 135,
139, 444 and 445. If you are using an application that utilizes these
ports, it will be affected by this action. These ports will remain
blocked for such a time as we feel it's necessary to protect you, our
customers.

That's a big minus..
You would definitely not feel the same way if you
already applied the security patches, ....last month that is;
and actually use apps that utilize any of the affected ports
(135, 139, 444, 445).

With service packs and patches applied, Windows XP is fine. It's only a
problem when people don't do that, just *any* other OS.

If so, it must be your regional Comcast... I'm getting 200-300 hits a
day on my firewall.

software wouldn't run on XP, what with Billy trying to make everyone
buy new software to support his business partners.
98SE is a mature and fairly great-working product, now. Mine hasn't
crashed or been rebooted in 2 months and it's in heavy use 24/7, even
with the Cerberus FTP server on it.
