Have Router -- Need Additional Connections
Posted by Kimberly Murphy-Smith on December 8th, 2003

O.K., this is probably a very dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway:

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 in my downstairs office. Three ports are in
use. The fourth has been run upstairs to the bedroom, where I can
connect in my laptop.

I'd like to surprise my husband with a laptop for the holidays.
However, that means I'll need one more connection upstairs. I don't
want to get in to the whole "wireless vs. wired" discussion; I've got
wired, and I'd like to take better advantage of the setup I've got.
What I want to know is, what do I add up there to get two connections
instead of the one? Another router? A hub? Something else?

I use a Netgear 2-port switch in a similar situation. Works very well.

Too early in the morning. :-)

Make that a 4-port switch. One for the incoming line, and three for computers.

Check eBay for a cheap switch (or hub).

Watch out for refurbs and used unless you want to give one a try.
There are some new ones on there pretty cheap - make sure you check
the shipping price since they tend to exaggerate it.

Some Netgear Models:

Switches - DS104, FS105, FS605
Hubs - EN104TP

If the one connection is handy, a small switch would do fine.
The smallest I've seen is 5 ports.

I know you said you didn't want to get into the wireless v wired discussion,
but for a relatively modest sum you can get a wireless router. Most of them
have for ports for hardwire.

Maybe I am missing something but can't she just plug in a hub to a router port?

The last hub I bought was $5 on Ebay plus $5 to ship.

Thanks to all for their assistance with this. I ended up with a

Have a great [insert holiday/lack thereof here]!
