Hayes keyboard commands in Win98 SE?
Posted by William R. Watt on October 19th, 2004

I am used to querying a modem on a DOS computer with the Bitcom comms
program by entering Hayes commands from the keyboard and now am trying to
diagnose a Sporster modem on a windows 98 SE with Hyperterminal. I have
looked thorugh two Windows 98 manuals without seeing how to do it. Is
there a way of sending Hayes commands to the modem and seeing the response
on the screen in windows 98 SE?

thanks

Create a "New Connection" in Hyperterminal. In the "Connect Using" field
select from the drop down list "Direct to comm X" where X is the comm
port assigned to your modem.

You should then be able to enter e.g. "AT" and recieve an "OK" response
from the modem if local echo is enabled. I keep such a Hyper Terminal
connection named "Modem Direct" on all systems that have a local modem.
great for troubleshooting.
