how can I increase my modem's speed?
Posted by Jer on January 6th, 2004

Or am I just simply stuck with what I got? I have a 56k(v.90) modem
and I get about 1.5 - 2.5kb/sec when I download files. I suppose this
would be the same for webpages and such.

I was just wondering if there were any programs that could help
increase my speed rate. Or perhaps something I could do with my phone
line? Perhaps I have problems with the quality of my phone line?

I do not know much about "modems", so you'll have to treat me as a
beginner. I have tried a few tweak applications for the modem but they
didn't seem to do much.

I have read in this newsgroup about ways of increasing modem speed.
Two that come to mind deal with using 2 modems to increase speed and
the other deals with pre-compressing images from webpages before they
are downloaded to my computer.

That's about all I know....any suggestions?

thanks.

We'd like to know some things before offering any advice:

Make and model of modem.
Operating system and amount of memory in the system.
Have you tried any other modems on your line or tried this system on any
other line?

Slow downloads can be caused by many things but the most common one is a
poor line and a modem not set properly to get the most out of it. The modem
tweaking programs aren't worth the download, in my opinion, and I would
recommend you uninstall any and re-install the modem to clear out any
"tweaks" they installed.

made by digicomsys (http://www.digicomsys.com). It is a 56k/v.90 pci
data/fax/voice.

win95 with about 320mb(pc100)

not really. I did try to hook up the modem to my phone box on the side
of my house but it doesn't seem to do much. but that was a long time
ago and I may have not checked it right. So I might try that again to
make sure...
