How do I determine maximum modem speed?
Posted by nick4soup@yahoo.com.au on April 26th, 2005

My question is ... what AT (or similar) command do I send to a modem to
find out what maximum speed it operates at?

My other question is ... where is a reference for all the (AT?)
commands used by modems? I used to have a modem's reference manaul,
but not any more.

I have got several internal modems (ones that plug into the
motherboard) from computer scrap, and I presume that it is a simple
matter of configuring the dip switches thereon for COM2, plugging it
in, starting up the computer, using a terminal program to communicate
with COM2, and sending an AT (or similar) command to the modem.

I run Linux at home, and I would strongly prefer not to have to install
windows and have it tell me about the hardware. I would also prefer not
to have to connect a phone line to the modem.

You know you're a UNIX-head when you find yourself ordering core
dumplings in a Chinese restaurant.

AT+MS=? works for some modems.

Contact me via email and I'll arrange to send you a 500MB CD of all
the modem data (AT commands, chipset datasheets, drivers) that I've
collected over the years. All I ask is that you defray my costs, ie
postage ($3 ?) + CD ($1).
