- How Do I Look at Modem initialization String
- Posted by J. P. Willis on January 31st, 2006
In Windows XP I need to see the modem initializatin string. I want
to make sure that modem goes off hok before starting to do dial up.
How do I do this??

In article <i3gvt15lras2mtptq8m8upp4cg5g31oicn@4ax.com>,
jopwill@ix.netcom.com says...
initialization string.
The log you sent me before and posted in this group by me earlier says
the modem is attempting to dial and then subsequently says there is no
carrier:
01-28-2006 15:41:41.273 - Dialing.
01-28-2006 15:41:41.273 - TSP(0000): LINEEVENT: LINECALLSTATE_DIALING
01-28-2006 15:41:41.283 - Send: ATDT###-####<cr>
01-28-2006 15:42:44.794 - Interpreted response: No Carrier
Contrary to what I said before, this isn't a no dialtone before
dialing error. Appparently the modem dials then the next thing shown
in the log is no carrier (which may be caused by the remote modem hanging
up). You said in another post:
"I hear no dialtone, then the modem starts dailing. I hear the usual
whine as it attempts a handshake. It dials all three numbers in
sequence then reports that there was no dialtone."
Based on this, it may initially connect but won't communicate properly
with the remote modem. I don't know why you don't hear a dial tone
before dialing - you should. Do you get a dialtone if you hook up a
handset to the line either plugging into the modem handset jack or the
wall jack?
To help isolate the problem, you should unplug everything on the line
temporarily except the PC modem and try dialing. Then if you still have
the problem, try another phone cord and phone jack elsewhere. If all
that fails, see if you can move the PC to another location with a
different phone line and try that. If that fails, then the modem is bad
or improperly installed.
As this is a controllerless (soft) modem, proper drivers are key. Are
you absolutely sure you installed the right ones?

Hey, I GOT CONNECTED FINALLY!!!
I did three things;
Firt I got a new modem, Diamond with DSP onboard, v92
Next I moved the computer to a new hopuse with a different
phone line.
Then I entered an init string for a v92 modem as instructed.
Things are working now, but we will have to see what happens when the
system is returned to its home place
Why did the software install place the proper inot string in the
modem? Is this a plug and play issue or what?

software driver install works for some reason; it's not a PnP issue.
