How to go from usb to ethernet port on my cable modem
Posted by Deb on November 6th, 2003

Please disregard last post, I meant cable modem, not linksys router.

I have a cable modem that has USB and ethernet connections, right now they
set it up with the USB out to the pc, but I want to change it over so the
modem will use the ethernet connection instead of USB. I have 4 port
linksys router to use as firewall.

Is it easy to just take out the usb connection of tne modem and use the
ethernet? what is involved if I connect it from modem to router to pcs
using ethernet? My pc has the usb and the ethernet on board.

Thanks

Switching from USB to Ethernet on your modem should be simple - remove
the USB cable and connect an Ethernet cable. You shouldn't have to
reconfigure the modem.

The hard part may be your pc. You'll have to configure the pc to talk
to the modem (or to the Linksys if you prepare properly) thru the
Ethernet port, not the USB. That involves a little reconfiguring,
changing the network bindings.

You may want to remove the USB network drivers after you get Ethernet
working - or not, it's your choice.

Plan it properly and it should take you maybe 1/2 hour or so to do it.
IMHO, it's worth it - Ethernet was designed for networking, USB was
designed for connecting peripherals to the pc, I don't consider the
two the same thing.

These links should help you understand what you need to do:

Should be, but what you describe will result in no pc link.

No, but you will have to reboot it. Power down the modem before you
make the switch, then power it back up.

No problem. Just connect everything and then turn the modem on, then
after it is connected, turn on the router, then turn on the PC(s).

If you have a Motorola 5100 you may need to remove the USB drivers
completely (see the users guide). There is a warning in the installation
instruction sheet: "Insert the CD-ROM only if you are going to make a USB
connection."
