Howard County, MD: Yo-yo this evening?
Posted by MAG on December 3rd, 2003

Hi Folks-

My Comcast cable modem is dropping connection every minute or so this
evening, starting just now. No association between loss of modem signal
and TV picture; cable TV looks fine.

Am I alone or part of a group of folks in a maintenance area?

If it keeps up I'll report the problem but thought I'd check around here
first to avoid the long holds...

Marc

Most of the time, when a cable modem is d/c because of signal problems,
it will not affect regular TV cable. This is because cable modems use
two different types of signal... Forward (which is the same thing as
incoming pictures), and return, which is what the modem sends back to
the headend. Also called downstream and upstream. The upstream is much
more sensitive to problems, mainly because it is used (most of the time)
at a very low frequency and is less tolerant of noise on the lines. If
the upstream goes out, or is out of specs, the modem will not get a
connection, but you'll still get a normal picture on the TV......

Yeah, I know it didnt answer your question...but I just thought I'd
throw that out there FYI

In article <MPG.1a382c1dcc5ac73398977b@news.md.comcast.gigane ws.com>,
Somebody@somewhere.com says...

A while after posting last night (which took a few tries due to signal
loss), I noticed that every time an application sent or received any
data, the modem would drop connection. It would sit fine and connected
for several minutes, then the instant I opened Explorer, newsreader, or
VPN client, BAM! the connection would drop.

This was extremely reproducible. And as a side effect, made it very hard
to send my post...

I considered the usual options, and decided to reboot the modem (instead
of performing a Brogan adjustment [kicking the modem]).

After that all was well.

Before the "oddness," during, and since, my values have been like this:

Forward Path:
Signal Acquired at 578.995 MHz
SNR: 37.4 dB
Received Signal Strength: -3.2 dBmV
Micro-Reflections: 23 dBc
Modulation: 64 QAM
Return Path:
Connection: Acquired
Frequency: 34 MHz
Power Level: 49.0 dBmV
Channel ID: 2
Modulation: QPSK

Any ideas what might have been going on? Last modem reboot was about 3
weeks ago when they rolled out the higher upstream in the area. Last
reboot before that was probably May when the power went out...

some strain relief to the power cable and the problem has never
re-occured. BTW this is the 3rd RCA that I've had were the power
connector goes bad after a few months.

Also what did you use to get your signal info?

Imeagle- Thanks for the suggestion. In my case, the power connector is
OK (the RCA DCM235 modem is almost three years old). It was very
strange, disconnecting immediately when I tried to move data around.
Perhaps overflowing logs or some weird thing. Anyway, a reboot fixed
it.

To get the signal info I use this address:

Have a great weekend.
