- I Can't Ping My Own IP Address
- Posted by Mark Mehome on August 6th, 2003
I recently got cable modem service from Comcast. I have tried to ping
my own IP and it always times out. From the headers you can see what I
believe to be the correct number. This corresponds to what the router
thinks is the WAN number. Can they block everything?
What gives?

My router has an option to acknowledge pings or not. Check your
config pages (WAN setup page on mine) on your router.
EG:
WAN Setup
x Respond To Ping On Internet Port

Yes, that is one reason the customer service people will insist you
diable your firewall before they test.

Mine is on the filters page. That made all the difference, but took
most of the ports out of stealth mode. They were closed but visible.
Not what I expected, but then what do I know.
Linksys calls it "Block WAN Request: ".
Thanks,
