.inf files
Posted by K.H. on August 26th, 2004

Hello again,

I have just discovered that .inf files are 'information' files...I was told
that the driver for my 'Wave Device' was called 'wavrss.inf'...but this as I
have just mentioned is only an 'information file'.

My Modem is 'Conexant' 56K PCI VOICE MODEM SF-1156IV+R9A, and I am running
'Windows 98SE'...once again, any help much appreciated

the inf files are necessary for your drivers. in this files is written
for example for which system are the drivers or the diver version or
which typ of divice you want to install and installation
"informations" (dlls and so on) and the regestry entries...
for every ini file you need a *.sys file and a *.cat file
Is this what you wanted to knew??

What I want to know is How to install the 'Driver' for my 'Wave Device for
Voice Modem'.

I cannot find the driver on any of my cd's, and I've downloaded it from
'driverguide.com' but its only a 'read me' notepad.

Much Appreciated,

Keith.

driver/inf files are nothing more than text files. As you mentioned in
another post, you have downloaded it, but it opened in notepad. If that
is the case, just click File|Save and save it to a known folder or your
desktop. In order to install the .inf file, click Start|Settings|Control
Panel|System|Device Manager. Right click your modem. Choose Properties.
You should then see several tabs, and one of them is Drivers. Open that
tab and you will see "Driver File details" and "Update drivers". Click
on that button, and direct it to where you just saved the .inf file.
Another way is to put the new downloaded .inf file in the C:\Windows\inf
so that in the future, it should re-install the modem and wav drivers
automatically, after being removed, and rebooting. Good luck.
