- Internet light on Linksys Wireless Router (model WRT54G)
- Posted by Mike Arnold on January 6th, 2004
I just installed Optimum Online and my connection is very slow.
I tried many different scenarios (including bypassing the router) and
always got the same results. I was wondering if my internet connection
(or modem) is the problem. Is the internet light on my router supposed
to be solid or blinking? Mine is constantly blinking. I would appreciate
any feedback from anyone who has the same router.
Thanks.

Maybe you need to tweak your OS for broadband. Check out the Tweak Test at

You didn't mention which OS you are running, so I can't say for sure if this
is applicable to you.

Power down the modem, the router, and the computers. Wait five minutes,
restart the modem, and when it is completely started, restart the
router, then restart your computers. Yes, it is typical that the net
activity lights blink constantly on both the modem and the router.
Now, for a reasonable download speed test, go to www.mandrake.com and
download an ISO image of a Mandrake Linux installation disk. Select a
download site that is near where you live. Note the starting time for
the download. Track the download, and when it gets to say 100MB, note
the time and terminate the download. BTW, do this at night say at
1:00-3:00 am when traffic is low.
Convert the elapsed time to seconds, divide the 100MB by the time in
seconds. (100MB = 100,000KB, report 100,000KB/time in seconds). If you
get anything less than say 100KB/sec, then the connection is slow, and
you need to call OOL support. 100-150KB/s is typical for a large
transfer over cable.

I have the WRT54G, the Internet light will blink constantly. This is normal
ethernet traffic, mostly ARP queries.
