[Linksys BEFSR41] Dead until power off / on
Posted by SiHiDa on August 5th, 2003

I've a strange problem:

Randomly my connection to the router is dead. I can't connect to the
config and of course, not to the Internet. If I power off the router
and afterwards switch on the router, everything is OK again.

My other PC has the same problems.

The leds on the router are still operating during the connection loss.

I use the new firmware: 1.45.6. But with previous firmwares problems
as well.

I hope someone knows a solution

Best regards,

Danny Bergsma

Holy Sh*t...
It uses a Realtek 16bit NIC chip-set !

Thanx, I've been wanting to take one apart. I don't use the 1 ports, I preper the 4 and 8
port versions, however, I'm sure they are similar but different ASIC chips.

| I had this problem when my linksys got older, it worked well for about a
| year then started going downhill. Different firmware sometimes helped (
| older ones tended to be better, I think 1.33 was best if I recall correctly)
| but none totally solved it..it seemed to lock up whenever I was moving a lot
| of data quickly..it was worse on 1.5 meg cable than 640K DSL.
| I never did get to the bottom of it, I thought it was overheating and even
| tried to fix this ( see link) but finally I just bought a different router
| ( D Link) and gave up on it. The best $40 I ever spent.
|
| Some interesting experiments with the router..

My BEFSR41 died during its 25th month (two-year warranty, naturally).
Symptoms were: LAN lights alternating all lit or all off; WAN lights
operating properly; could not talk to the router via LAN.

I spent 45 minutes on the phone with Linksys. The unit would work if I
unplugged it for a while, but eventually stayed dead. The tech wanted to
send me a program to try to force communications with it, but eventually I
convinced him it was cheaper for me to just go buy a new unit.

Found BEFSR44s for sale at Circuit City: regular price $59.99, $10 rebate
from Linksys, $20 rebate from Circuit City. Total cost: $29.99 plus tax on
$59.99. And it has newer firmware than is even available on Linksys's web
site. Would have cost me twice that to send the old one in and try to get it
fixed.

A week later two friend's Linksys routers also died. All were around 2 - 2.5
years old. Great products for the short term.
