Linksys BERSR41 v.2 Everything was fine.

Hello -

I've been connected to cox in So. Cal for 1 year. The modem
(purchased) from cox) is a D-Link SCM-200. I hooked up a Linksys
BEFSR41 v.2 router in between the modem and the computer. Using this
config, I had great availability/connectivity for 1 year until about
three weeks ago. The initial symptom was that a sessiom would hang
when surfing on the net; the browser would start clocking and could
not get to any site. I checked the connection by doing an ipconfig
/all in a command session and could see that the DNS servers were in
the fact the ip address of the router. (when things were working, the
ip address of the computer was the router; and the DNS server
addresses were clearly cox).

I have "obtain addresses automatically" set on the router and what I
don't understand is why it drops the DNS server addresses.

I call cox and they doing "something" and connectivity is better for
about a 4-8 hours. Then it reverts to the aberant behavior. I IMed
with Linksys and they suggested a firmware upgrade which I did. Again
things are cool for about 4-8 hours and then I'm stuck. Can't browse
or ping sites like yahoo. I am perplexed because I have not changed
any settings on anything in the last two years and then kaput.

I called Cox again and they suggested that I remove the router. I did
so and they "reset some settings" and I'm up and ok again.

My problem is that I really need the router for a myriad of reasons.
The only thing I can think of is that something changed on cox which
togther with my router (or the way its configured) results in this
behavior. I googled the group for Linksys and Cox and could not find a
problem like mine. Can someone help me out ? TIA -jim

Hi Jim,

Yes, get the version 1.44.2 firmware from the Linksys FTP site, and
flash over the 1.45.7, assuming that's what you're running.

Download it from Linksys' site here:

ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/befsr41/befsr-fw-1442.zip

I was having disconnects with 1.45.7 on my BEFSR41 v.2.1 more often
than very 24 hours. No problems for the last 2.5 days with the older
1.44.2 firmware!

You'll see others with the exact same problem in this newsgroup AND
elsewhere on various forums.

People are theorizing that someone has exploited a bug in the Linksys
routers in a "denial of service" type of attack....and apparently
1.45.7 has the problem.

By the way, print screens from any of the Linksys setup menus in case
you made any customizations, because flashing the firmware WILL erase
all your custom settings!

Good Luck!

Ford Man

Thank you for posting this info. I've had problems with 1.45.7 on my
BEFSR41 (original) as well. I went back to 1.44.2z.

I'm not certain I ever ran into any sort of DOS. I am able to reproduce
the problems immediately after upgrading the firmware. A friend has the
same unit and he had the same issues with it.

The problem was that I run a windows Terminal Server / Citrix Metaframe
Server behind the unit, so I pass through RDP and ICA ports. Whenever I
went to the latest firmware, I would get packet fragmentation / out of
order / encryption errors. Somehow, the latest firmware was corrupting or
messing up incoming ICA and RDP packets. Soon as I backed out to 1.44.2z,
no more problems.

I've sent several emails to Linksys support, documenting the issue along
with screenshots of the router config and errors. I've never received a
single response. I don't think they are too interested in fixing it. My
guess is they would rather people just use the old firmware. It's funny,
because the docs for 1.45.7 say:

" 3.Fixed fragmented packets arriving out of order."

And this looks like the problem it's causing for rdp/ica.
