- Linksys router wireless wrt54g problem
- Posted by nilanjan on December 4th, 2003
Hello
Any ideas why my linksys wireless route wrt54g stopped working for
wireless but works fine as a wired router when I connect via lan cable
to multiple machines.
I have Comcast cable modem. Computers work fine when connected
directly.
The desktop connected to the router via cable is WindowsNT 4.0. Works
fine with the router. Even the 2 laptops work fine when connected to
the linksys router via wired cable.
My laptops WindowsXP and Win2k both used to work with the wireless
router, but now none of them seem to get the wireless signal. Both
laptops are getting and successfully connecting to couple of my
neighbor's wireless lans though !!
This setup used to work before !! but I was getting
disconnected/dropped every now and then, Linksys support suggested I
upgrade the firmware which I did by downloading the latest version, I
upgraded my windowsNT service pack etc...
I am not a networking expert , but I have spent many many hours to
resolve this with Linksys support, Comcast support , reading internet
,manuals etc cant get it to work !!
Help please !! or any pointers !!

You didn't recently get a new cordless phone did you? Mine reset my WRT to
its default settings and I wasn't really even near it. Just a thought.

Can your neighbor see your wireless? Perhaps have someone with a
working -g setup simply see if the network appears on their equipment. I
would first try power cycling your modem and the router. If this
doesn't restore wireless, then completely reset the router, however that
is done and start from ground zero. Others have downgraded BIOS
versions on LinkSys routers using the files on ftp.linksys.com .
It is unusual from my experience that all wireless will cease; unless
you have inadvertantly disabled the wireless itself at the router. On
my -b wireless, changing the antenna selection will completely eliminate
the received signal on some settings also, probably due to the
construction of my house.
Otherwise, perhaps the router has failed.

You've isolated the issue to the wireless access point in the
router. Can you tell us more such as which revision of the firmware
you're using, what wireless clients you're using, and their
firmware/drivers? Are you using WEP? WPA? No security?
So it was at least working albeit with drops, ..but upon upgrade to
the latest firmware it stopped working at all?

If you are running WEP, try generating a new set of keys.

Thanks for the responses !!
I think I have to get it replaced but it seems that is a lengthy
process from their website and I have to pay for shipping too !! And a
pain. I read some postings where Linksys refused to honor the warranty
too !! My router was purchased about 2 months ago ...
I did try the reset button many times , in fact I am wondering if too
many resets or long durations of resets caused the wireless function
to get screwed up !! as the support folks had once asked be to keep
the reset button depressed for long time 10 or maybe 30 seconds
I have also done multiple power cycling etc ... There is a LED for the
wireless signal and that is not glowing at all. The others for
internet , power, ports etc are glowing fine.
I have spent too much time on this .. you know how frustating it gets

About 2 years ago I had the uplink port go out on my Linksys Wireless
router.
I was able to use a cross over cable into one of the other ports so it
was not a major problem.
I contacted Linksys they crossed shipped against my credit card.
They were fast getting the router out to me and they never charged my
card other then the shipping.
As smooth RMA process as I have ever had,
At work we had a Linksys 24 port 10/100 switch die. Sent it back and
the one they shipped was a used and apperently not tested. It locked up
after about 5 mins. Power cycle and you were good for another 5 mins.
Major hassle returning the RMA unit since we did not have a receipt.
Well no duh its a warrenty replacement. We had all the paperwork and
RMA number but, they couldn't figure it out. Took several calls to talk
to someone with brain.
Replacement finally was shipped think it took about 2 weeks. This one
appears to be new but, it will likely never be installed. Been sitting
on the shelf in the box for about 2 years now. We never even broke the
shink wrap. Went out and bought another brand while dealing with them
on the phone and via email.

I assume you ARE using a different channel than your neighbor? Did you ask
the neighbor when they installed relative to your problem starting?

Well it would help if I knew WHICH neighbor to ask !!
I am getting 3 different Wireless signals from 3 different neighbors
... and I have many neighbors ( more than 3 ) ;-))
Also
-- tried with and without WEP
-- tried all kinds of channel numbers
-- reset button
-- Only think I am doubting now, is if the reset button itself damaged
the equipment as I was told to keep it pressed for 30 seconds , power
off /on / off /on ... etc etc etc ...
