- looking for v.92 flash for venus lucent v.90 pcmcia modem
- Posted by Joseph Phillips on August 4th, 2003
Hi,
I'm looking for a v.90 to v.92 flash upgrade for a zoltrix v.90 pcmcia
fax modem. I'm not sure if it's venus lucent chip is 1mb or 2mb
flash-upgradable but I recently upgraded it from the p41698 v.90 code
up to the p73198a v.90 code via downloads at zoltrix's alternate
website that I found through a google search.
Here's all I can tell you about the modem:
P/N: BFM5602-LF
REG NO: 5C1TAI-32744-M5-E
REN: 0.6B
VER: 1.0
and below the warranty void if removed sticker, next to the FCC
standards symbol is a [16] and [5V] inside these triangle-shaped
areas. I seem to recall that the flash program said the card had 16
sectors, assuming it's the same as above, then that might at least be
helpfull in judging how big the flash-upgrade can be.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I currently enjoy the benefits
of v.92 (internal modem) on a notebook I bought last year but would
like to be able to also use v.92 features on my older laptop that I
use on occasion when I visit relations.
Thanks,
Joseph

Unfortunately I can't help you with any V.92 stuff, but AFAICT your
modem is probably a 2Mbit version.
Here is what I managed to find:
ATI3 responses:
http://www.zoltrix.multinet.pl/modem...s.htm#FMPCM56f
Drivers and firmware:
http://www.zoltrix.multinet.pl/modem...6f-drivers.htm
56K V.90 Modem PCMCIA p73198a (latest V.90 firmware)
http://www.zoltrix.multinet.pl/PUBLI...5/V90-56f2.exe
Venus V.90 kfav 163 PCMCIA p41698 (old V.90 firmware)
http://www.zoltrix.multinet.pl/PUBLI...95/V90-56f.exe
Venus K56FLEX kfav 141 PCMCIA p091097 (K56flex firmware)
http://www.zoltrix.multinet.pl/PUBLI...IN95/56pcm.exe
The p73198a firmware .hex file (2MV90LF.HEX) converts to a binary
image file of size 248KB. This is slightly less than 2Mbits and is
consistent with the "2M" in the filename.
The p41698 archive contains 2mv90na.hex and 4mv90na.hex files, which
convert to .bin files of size 248KB and 367KB, respectively. The
p091097 archive produces two .bins (4mk56 and 2mk56) of size 503KB and
247KB. This suggests that your modem may have been manufactured in
2Mbit and 4Mbit versions.

Thank you for taking the time to describe all the files like that,
Franc. Now that I look at the hex files like you showed it does
indeed appear I have a 2MB flashrom. I can tell you when I flashed
from p41698 up to p73198a all the numbers in the dialog box where less
than or equal to the numbers that appeared for the actual rom itself
like sector/loader size, etc.
So I guess now all I have to do is track down a 2mb v.92 flash-upgrade
that's less-than-or-equal-to 16 sectors that can be flashed onto a
pcmcia card with a venus-lucent chipset.

The numbers and sizes of sectors can vary between chips. For example,
here are three AMD flash memories:
Am29F100T/B - 1Mbit - 5 sectors
1 x 16KB, 2 x 8KB, 1 x 32KB, 1 x 64KB
Am29F200T/B - 2Mbit - 7 sectors
1 x 16KB, 2 x 8KB, 1 x 32KB, 3 x 64KB
Am29F040 - 4Mbit - 8 sectors
8 x 64KB
FWIW, Zoom models 3075L/3076L appear to be Lucent Venus based PCMCIA
V.92 modems.
See http://www.zoom.com/ts1/analog/model3075.shtml#files
Assuming you can find the V.92 code, I would first ensure that your
modem has an identical line codec before attempting to flash it.
