Losing Internet Connection
Posted by Raymond W. on August 14th, 2003

I have the following config:

Desktop: Windows XP -- Home
Laptop: Windown 2000 Professional
SB4101 Surfboard Cable Modem
Zone Alarm Firewall
Comcast Cable Service
D-Link DI-604 Router

I always leave my desktop computer on (and all associated devices like
cable-modem, etc.). I do not have a problem connecting to the
internet but when I get back in the morning (or after a prolonged time
of inactivity) I need to reboot in order to get access to the
internet.

I also have my laptop connected which I leave on overnight sometimes.
I never have to reboot my laptop to get access to the internet even
after prolonged time of inactivity.

I had this problem 6 months ago and it went away. Now, it came back.
Releasing the modem through Ipconfig DOS command does not help. The
only fix is to reboot. Please note that I do not have the power
management turned on to put the Network card to "sleep" after some
time of inactivity.

Any input is appreciated.

I had this problem too. A friend told me to turn off the "low power"
setting on my ENet card. If you're using DHCP, the card can lose it's IP
address while in sleep mode, but doesn't send out the request to renew the
address when it wakes up.

I had already switched to using a static IP address on my home network which
has taken care of the problem as well.

I have this problem too, but I can't find any place in the ENet card
settings to turn off any kind of "low power" option. Could somebody point
out where to look? (Maybe my setup doesn't allow this fix.)

Configuration:
Windows 98
Zone Alarm Firewall
Comcast cable Internet service
EZ Connect USB / Ethernet Converter
Surfboard SB 3100
Windows 98 power management:
- turns off display after 25 minutes.
- never turns off disk.
- System standby set to "Never".
(The problem doesn't seem related to the display turning off. Sometimes the
problem happens while working during the day with the display on.)

Thanks!
