Make a traditional phone call using my cable modem service
Posted by Jason R. Fayling on July 13th, 2003

I am trying to find out information about trying to setup my home with
the ability to make phone calls using normal telephones, but going
through my cable modem service instead of using the traditional
telephone company. Is this possible? I think the technology is called
IP Telephony or Voice over IP (I am a newbie when it comes to these
technologies.) Can anybody recommend any services or how-to documents
on setting up what I want to do?

Thanks for your time.

VoIP works great on broadband.......but.........

VoIP COMPANIES SUCK!

One of them, now long bankrupt, caused me to have to change credit
cards because there was no way to turn it off once you got it started!

Take my advise.....Put VoIP internet telephone service out of your
mind. None of the companies have ever made it work like a phone and
go bankrupt right and left somethin' awful!.....

You are right in the second name. Voice Over IP (VOIP.) Vonage is one
big name. You put your cable modem on a hub or switch, and then connect
your computers and the VOIP adaptor to it. One drawback would be that it
would only serve one phone, unless you want to rewire to tap into your
main phone wiring.

Also, many cable companies are offereing 'digital' phone service, too.
The difference is that it's not part of your internet connection. I assume
they mount an adaptor where your phone line comes in and connect the line
to it.

Just be aware of the reliablity of your cable service versus a regular
landline phone. Also, if you are in an area with Enhanced 911 (where the
911 center will instantly have your address), check to find out if calling
911 with VOIP or cable phone will work properly. Like cell phones, they
may not be able to get your exact address. They may only get a general
area, or even nothing.
