- Manual connection to NTL broadband in XP
- Posted by Joe on October 9th, 2003
I have a pc with win 98, and it is setup with a motorola 4100 surfboard
cable modem connecting to NTL broadband. It was installed using the NTL
installer CD v1.3 (the latest), and it works fine.
I now have a 2nd PC with a fresh install of XP on it. I've tried running
the NTL install program, but it keeps stopping with the message 'you must be
logged on as admin to run the app'. I am logged in as admin, but if refuses
to work.
Is it possible to just create an internet connection in XP without their
crappy software, and if so what is the correct procedure, and where do I
select the modem and user name etc?
btw. I'm using a network connection direct to the modem, and I'm not trying
to share it between the two PCs (which aren't networked) or anything funny
like that...

The crappy software is possibly due to its being for Win9x and not XP.
If you have a network connection (ethernet cable) to the modem, all you
need to do is run the new connection wizard. Open network connections,
select one of Set up a home or small office network if you have a router
or switch; or Create a new connection if it is XP direct to modem
without any required connection to the other computer.
