modem code for v.34
Posted by Scott on July 10th, 2004

I just got the usr5660a software modem. The connect speeds are better from
26.4 k to 32k, but like another posting not as stable especially for gaming.
I'm downloading an extra 4 megs an hour I figure when I tested it out, but
the latency has shot up from 280 ms to over up to like 500 ms while gaming,
really bad. Is there anything I can do to lower the ping for better fast 2
way data instead of a major jam packed one way download like this modem is
doing all the time. Or is just the way it is...? Maybe I'll go back to the
24k connect Ambient MD563X-HaM modem and put up with the little less meg
downloads and go for the better latency. I have the newest drivers for both
the Ambient MD563X-HaM and the usr5660a. I thought usr would be the best,
guess intel's ambient wins over latency unless there's something I can do
like v.34 or something to kick it down into better gaming mode.

Any help would be great Thanks

FWIW, the USR5660a is a rebadged Conexant HSF softmodem, while the
Ambient MD563X-HaM modem is a controllerless type. Based on other
people's experience, this would probably account for the USR's much
higher latency, although I don't know why.

You can limit a Conexant modem to V.34 by adding +MS=V34 to your extra
settings.

I put both modems in so, hehe, comparing I still like the HaM, but I always
thought 24k was a little low for connect but web browsing it seems to do as
good as the 32k robotics one so. The robotics really tries hard when
downloading. So it's a Conexant HSF softmodem? All I need is a shotgun
modem isp and I'm set, hehe.

The INF file in this driver archive contains references to Rockwell,
Conexant, and HSF_MODEM:
http://www.usr.com/support/5660a/566...5660a_2KXP.exe

The PCI Vendor ID is 16EC and Device ID is 2F00. Conexant's Listmodem
utility identifies this combination as a USR HSFi modem. To verify
this for yourself, go to ...

.... and get the following:

Yep, I got the driver from usr, I don't trust the cd ones with Xp much.
I'll check out the other stuff too.
