modem won't connect
Posted by David on August 17th, 2004

Hi all,

I need an init string that will shorten the amount of time it takes to
connect, as well as ensure that it connects in the first place. I don't know
what model / make the modem is, and it's an older computer. Whenever windows
(98SE) tries to install it, it shows up under 'other devices' and PCI
communications device, with a yellow exclamation mark next to it. Presently,
I'm using a generic lucant win modem driver, which seemed to solve the
problem. It is dialing the number, but it eventually gives up and gives me
an error message saying 'no answer' and provides the error number 678.

I would appreciate any suggestions you might have, or possibly an init
string that might help.

Thanks,
David

modem. That will require you to ID it. Since you can communicate
with it via the Lucent driver you're using, I suggest you open a
Hyperterminal session and send ati commands to it or look for the
responses under control panel's additional information for the modem.
Post the responses back here and we can try to help you find the
driver.

Hyperterminal instructions:

Control Panel:

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Modems -> Properties ->
Diagnostics:

Highlight your modem, and select More Info...after a few moments you
should receive a information box containing test results from your
modem, including ati results.
