Installed a new "hardware" modem in a new machine.
Machine ran tests said O.K.
Tried to FAX ...no dial tone.
Tried net connection....no dial tone.
I have two phone lines "A", for voice and
"B" for net ,fax and sometimes voice.
Line and old machine with a Winmodem were working fine.
Tried calling phone company from
line "A" to report line "B" found line "A" not
working lot of garbage on line.
Unpluged modem all phone service
restored. Returned modem to store got another
it does the same thing!
Even with the modem unattached to the machine
if I put a phone line from line "B" to it, it will
also disrupt line "A". BUT if I attach it to line "A"
I get no interference on the line.
Unfortunately I cannot get line "A" to my computer.
Is there such a difference between a "hardware" modem and a "Winmodem"
as to cause this type of problem?

done so that you can use a two line phone... but many (not all)
modems have connections on the jack pins for the second line,
and will mess it up the second line if plugged into a jack wired
for two lines vs. just one.

The solution can be any of, 1) at the "B" wall jack, remove the
cable wires going to the yellow and black jack wires, 2) use a
modular cable that has only two wires, not four, or 3) install
another jack that is wired only to the "B" line.

I made a modular cord set using only the green and red wires and my
modem now works without screwing up the entire phone system.
