- Motorola sb5100 cable modem question
- Posted by Roland on October 9th, 2003
This modem has a ethernet cable and usb cable. Is this unit designed
to run two computers or would this overload the modem? Regards...

Nope. Use one or the other. Preferably ethernet.

It is designed to run one computer or other device -- the cable goes into
the modem and ONE item comes out. That one item can be connected to the
Ethernet port OR to the USB port, not both. Best to use the Ethernet port.
If you want to run more than one computer, get a router -- it'll cost $40 to
as much as you want to spend, $50 should get you a good Linksys, SMC,
Netgear, etc. The cable runs into the modem. The Ethernet connection from
the modem output goes to the router input. Then, you can connect as many
things to the router as the router has ports.
For example, I have a Motorola SB51OO with the Ethernet connection running
into a SMC 7004 Barricade router with four ports. One of the ports goes to
my desktop. The other port goes to my Netgear ME102 wireless access point
that broadcasts to my laptop wherever I happen to be with it in the house or
lawn.

Contrary to what others have posted, the SB5100 does support simultaneous
use of the Ethernet and USB ports. However, for that to work, your cable
company must allow your equipment to get at least two IP addresses from
them. Most cable companies only include a single IP address in their
service while offering additional IP addresses for an extra cost.
In fact, the SB5100 can support up to 32 different computers directly
connected to it, as long as the cable company provides 32 IP addresses (see
"versatility features" on
http://broadband.motorola.com/consum...oducts/sb5100/)
Of course, to have more than one computer connected to the Ethernet port,
you must use a switch or hub. The USB port can only support one computer.
Since additional IP addresses usually cost extra, most people are better off
using a router to share a cable modem.
