Multitech DSVD modem question
Posted by Rick Karlquist N6RK on November 8th, 2003

Looking for a sanity check on the following modem application:

I am interested in connecting to a remote radio using DSVD
modems. I would like the remote DSVD modem to autoanswer
the phone line, and automatically go into DSVD mode, so
that I have 2 way audio and 2 way data. The headset audio
would connect to the radio mic and speaker ports. The
data would control the radio over its serial port. This needs to be
unattended (at the remote end) and preferably not require
a computer at that end. Additionally, I need to be able to
force the baud rate of the remote serial port to a specific
speed, such as 1200 or 9600 baud, since the radio only
works at certain speeds, not 115,200 like computers.
My dial up line can connect at up to 28.8k, but I assume
it can be throttled back.

The manual on Multitech's web site show 100's of configuration
commands, so it seems like this should be possible, but it would
be helpful to get a sanity check from a knowledgable person
before investing a lot of time and money to get up the learning
curve.

Also curious if anyone can comment on the audio quality of DSVD.
Is it "toll quality" or "VoIP quality" or ?

Thanks,
